NEWS ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY
MORE SCREENINGS…..August is going to be busy! We are delighted that the amazing THE WING women’s co working space have invited us to screen TO KID OR NOT TO KID at a members only screening event in New York City, Thursday August 8th. They have spaces all around the US & this feels like the perfect partnership for us. Hopefully we’ll be coming to their other work spaces soon. Watch this space.
Then more upcoming film festival screenings. At the end of the month Maxine will spend her birthday (August 2nd) at the 28th Woods Hole Film festival, in Cape Cod, USA. We really hope we can celebrate with some of you there.
More press…...We were also thrilled that Talkhouse TV and Film blog let Maxine write not only about a women in film, but more importantly about the lack of women without children being represented. You’ve all heard the hubub (and not just from childfree blogs) but from Variety and Vulture magazine too, about childfree storylines being usurped and childfree people changing their mind. Maxine writes about this in depth and for a blog that TV writers take notice of. A major win for us childfree folks.
And last month we forgot to mention that Big Think also covered the film and gave us some great press. Full articles are also on our press page.
Keep checking in as we’ll have news of the Fall release of the film soon, as we’re booking towns and cities. So see you very, very soon. We can’t wait.
We begin this month back in Ohio, USA and as they’re fighting these new barbaric abortion laws we are thrilled to be here with our childfree film TO KID OR NOT TO KID. Today we’ll be at the Akron library’s huge and gorgeous auditorium playing at the Bechdel Film Festival. You can get tickets here.
JUNE 2ND SCREENING - Akron Library, Akron OHIO
We are also super happy to announce more screenings, every month throughout the summer and we add more all the time. So stay in touch.
JULY - Wood’s Hole Film festival - Begins July 27th Woods Hole, Cape Cod.
AUGUST - Sociologists For Women In Society - New York City Hilton Midtown - Monday August 12th.
We were thrilled to have some great press this month for our Ohio screenings. In a state that is threatening women’s bodily autonomy we couldn’t have hoped for more. Bechdel Fest is a film festival all about putting films about women first, with women directors, all about women in film. What couldn’t be more awesome.
We have MORE SCREENINGS and we couldn’t be happier to head back to OHIO, USA at the end of this month, June 1st and 2nd. To the brilliantly titled Bechdel Festival in Akron.
One of the main reasons we are desperate to get back to Ohio is because of the the new Ohio abortion law being pushed through in the US at the moment, it’s devastating. The state of Ohio was the first with their controversial new Ohio heartbeat bill and other states are following suit. One teenager told us is so afraid of getting raped in Ohio as she knows her parents are pro choice and would make her keep her baby. We need to support young women like her.
Last week, Georgia passed the nation’s most extreme attack on Roe v. Wade, prohibiting abortion after six weeks. It can even target women who miscarry. We want to go to Georgia too, so if you live there and know a festival or theater or University, please invite us. We aim to take the film to as many of these states that are being threatened by these laws, as possible. Alabama’s legislation, would ban all abortions at any stage of pregnancy, going further than any other state if the Governor signs it into law in the next few months. We are desperate for an invite to screen the film in Alabama too. We will make sure we get to places where the film can make the most impact.
But on a more hopeful note (it can hard in these times to feel hopeful) Bechdel Film Festival is exactly the type of festival we can get behind. If you don’t know, the festival is named after Alison Bechdel's comic in a 1985 strip called The Rule. For a nice video introduction to the subject check out The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies on feministfrequency.com.
The Bechdel Test, sometimes called the Mo Movie Measure or Bechdel Rule is a simple test for films which names the following three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. We LOVE THIS TEST as it really gives evidence for women being underrepresented!

We also, just last weekend, filmed our digital series for ITVS in the US and can’t wait to tell you more about it. It’s a spin-off series called SHOULD WE KID OR NOT?, discussing all things childfree, childless and whether, or how to have children. It will be available later this year on the ITVS youtube channel. Indie Lens Storycast. We can’t wait.
Great news… we have another film festival announcement, for this month! Sunday 21st April in celebration of Earth Day at 2.30pm at the fantastic Hollywood theater in Portland, Oregon, so exciting. AND we’ll be there, we can’t wait to see you Portlanders. Get your tickets here https://hollywoodtheatre.org/comingsoon
But we also wanted to share how awesome our screening was at the Cleveland Film festival and want to share some photos and reviews from the packed house. It was an amazing weekend. I just wish the women who came up to me in tears felt more supported about her decision. Come on people, all reproductive choices are fine, it’s a choice remember.
It’s the beginning of the month and we are thrilled to announce we’re coming to Cleveland, Ohio US at the end of the month. Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 12:00 PM, Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 4:50 PM. You can buy tickets here on March 15th. We’re adding more new towns and cities and countries so keep checking in.
So much has been going on. Just yesterday we were mentioned on Dutch TV, thanks to friend of the film and author Lisette Schuitemaker. At 6:15 minutes in the author talks about her new book and the TV show talks about the film and shows clips of our fundraising trailer at 10:38.
This month we’ve screened in Maine, New York City and next month Cleveland Ohio. And we’re adding more destinations as we type, so let us know if you have a favorite cinema or film festival and we’ll try and bring the film to you.
We’ve loved hearing the great feedback from audiences, this one especially touched our hearts from our screenings this month.
Happy New Year everyone. We have some great news, we’re going to be adding more laurels to this poster as we have more SCREENINGS!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Kwanzaa and all-round great holidays to you all,
As this is the time of year when we spend time with those we care about (and sometimes those that we might feel indifferently about!) we just want to say how much we appreciate you, our community. We’ve had a great end of the year, so here’s a quick update as so much amazing news has happened, along with sending all our best wishes. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Many of you were able to attend our sold-out world premiere at DOC NYC and it was wonderful to see you there. It was also amazing because we couldn’t fit everyone in the theater! Just shows how many people are in this community and interested in the subject of being childfree. Lovely to see so many of our Kickstarter supporters there as well. We had an exciting screening full of laughs, tears, and an engaging Q&A after the film.
Don’t be dismayed if you weren’t able to make it, we’re in the process of setting up more screenings, and asking where folks would like to see the film shown next. We’ll post this update on Facebook as well and you can reply in the comments and let us know where you’re based. We look forward to screening in your town and seeing you there. We’ve heard from quite a few of you already and here’s the big list that we will do our best to make happen:

We’ve also started to have some exciting meetings with TV networks after our premiere, so watch this space, you’ll be the first to know. We’ve had some great press already, the first ever positive article on living childfree appearing in The Daily Mail (the second biggest selling daily newspaper in the UK) covering the film.
Watch out for January and news of our next screening at The University of Maine, Bangor, USA, so spread the word. And again have a fantastic holiday, all our very best!
NOVEMBER 2018 Where to start. The premiere was incredible, and we will be posting a bigger update but we have been overwhelmed with the outpouring from the audience and press, thank you it’s been incredible and we’re saving everything. But we want to make sure that people know where to see the film next.
More festivals will be showing the film early next year. We will then release the film online later in the year but if you can’t wait that long you can pre order the film here on the website and we will try and release those earlier if we can. Stay tuned and sign up to your newsletter on the front page of this website, then you’ll know as much as we do. Here’s some great press just from today, the UK’s The Daily Mail newspaper no less.
See you soon. Maxine and all the crew.

FALL 2018 - FIRST DAY OF FALL AND THE FILM IS DONE! AND, AND, AND, MORE NEWS.
WE’VE FINISHED THE FILM after 5 years of making it and it feels incredible. Thank you for all your support along the way - both financially and emotionally. We literally couldn't have got this far without you.
With the production phase over, our attention is now all about getting the film seen. We've begun talking to distributors and film festivals already, to get the film out to you. So watch this space or head on over to facebook, or twitter, or whatever platform you prefer https://www.facebook.com/tokidornottokid
If you’re worried about not hearing about the release, the best thing to do is add your email address to our home page here. That way you can keep up with all our news and updates. And please share with your friends and colleagues who may feel the same way or be torn about what is best to do themselves. From my experience, just knowing other people are going through the same as me has been a great support. The more people we can share our film with the better.
WE ALSO SHOT OUT OUR NEW PUBLIC TV PILOT
But that’s not all, this weekend we shot our first ITVS pilot for a spin off web series. Where people across the divide get a chance to talk with each other about whether we have kids, or not. Simply titled “Should We kid Or Not”. ITVS helps fund independent film makers like me to tell their stories and reach millions either through public service television or online. The hope is that the web series will be picked up to have further episodes and a full series online. Again we will let you know if they decide to go to a full series. If you want to be involved/tell your story we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch at Contact@helpmanproductions.org
A FIRST - ARTICLE IN CHRISTIAN MAGAZINE ABOUT CELEBRATING BEING CHILDFREE
And now to today. And this feels a huge success. The biggest Christian online magazine ran an article about the film with the headline “Childfree By Choice, why it can be something to celebrate”. I’m from a religious background and sometimes when I’ve gone to church in the past it has felt so family focused that I really have felt the odd one out, so I’m thrilled that we’re getting recongnized by the Christian community.
EMPOWERMENT, BREAKING THE MYTHS WITH A HASHTAG
We also want to hear about ways you have broken the myths about living childfree. We’ll post the best ones we receive. Tell us how you respond to people when they ask you why you don’t have kids. By using the hashtag of the film #tokidornottokidthemovie AND #breakingthemyth or #bestresponses
Many thanks again for your time and support.

SPRING 2018 Do you know MIC? We love them, we got over three million views of this interview in early this year. Enjoy, we loved the interview. Many people got in touch with us and we were overwhelmed by your kind words and support.
2017 went out like a bang for us, sometimes having this last name helps. Maxine talked about her new documentary TO KID OR NOT TO KID on FOX News! Yeah. The film will be out next year.
2016 We were in full production from 2015 to 2017, having shot our first scenes in 2013, to see if people really wanted this story. in 2016 Brazilian TV found us.
